BICYCLE CLASSES

Urban Cycling Workshops

May 1 & 4 or May 8 & 11, Irvine

Email Pete van Nuys to register. Call 949 492 5737 for more information.

Orange County Bicycle Coalition supports and promotes cyclist education through classroom classes and “real world” experience “skills and drills” on the road.  This class is open to bicyclists of all abilities, age 14 and older.

We like to limit the size of the class to around 20 people to enable the best personal level of attention, but we have done larger with advanced notice and sufficient assistants and volunteers.

During this 9 hour course we’ll separate bicycle safety fact from fiction, teach real, proven, and effective behaviors to make cycling easier and less stressful. Basic mechanics and fitting are covered, too.

At left, a student carves a turn on her commuting bike that would make any bike racer proud. In addition to learning people tell us this class is FUN!

A typical evening’s 3 hour presentation includes safety, bike handling, law, and traffic theory. The 6 hour ride portion of the course includes essential mechanics, bicycle drills,  a survey of street conditions and behavior, and a final exam.

The class is a 2 day commitment, typically a mid-week 3 hour evening, and a 6 hour weekend day.

Classes are $35 which includes materials, insurance, a written exam and (usually) a diploma “suitable for framing.”

Our last 3 courses have been sell-outs, so we know you’re interested!

Club presidents wishing to sponsor their members may e-mail Pete van Nuys, or call 949 492 5737 for scheduling.

This is the only class approved by the League of American Bicyclists, developed over 30 years, producing thousands of happy, confident, and competent on-road cyclists.  For the full calendar of Traffic Skills 101 classes in Southern California, see the League of American Bicyclists calendar page.

If you are interested in forming a group to create a course in your area, please let us know where and when and how many by completing the following survey:

What City would you like the course to be held?
How many people would be attending?
What are your preferred dates?

. If you choose to leave your name and e-mail, you’ll be contacted to coordinate calendars.

Thanks for your time, interest, and support!

    Sorry for the late reply.
Far as I know no one offers bike ed to kids under about 10. It’s all up the parents below that. What kids can actually process and learn changes dramatically as their brains and coordination evolve. As for those awesome “tricks,” well, that’s why nature has slightly more males born than females….

Have schedule conflicts for both of the sessions in May but interested in future classes.

Also interested in finding training for a 1st grader who does ride but could use some ‘awesome’ instruction to become a better rider. (before some of his attempts at ‘tricks’ produces a trip to the ER)Web produces plenty of motorcycle training sites but have not found a bicycle one yet. Any suggestions?

Hello, I am interested in taking the bicycle class. I’m an adult who just recently started learning how to ride a bike and am still not very good at it. Thank you.
