The streets of Irvine come alive at 06:30 and fill with riders and runners on a Cinco de Mayo celebration.  Except that it’s really the Seis de Mayo, but it’s a party for a cause so who cares, right?

Bike Tour: Starts at 06:30

The 50K Bike Tour will be a clockwise journey through Santiago Canyon using Irvine Center, Laguna and Sand Canyon, Portola, Jamboree, Santiago Canyon, El Toro, Glenn Ranch, Portola, Bake, Muirlands / Barranca, and Irvine Center to the finish on Gateway.

Regular riders in these areas should expect extra traffic (of the good 2 wheel kind) while the peloton passes thru.
Sprocket Sez: Resist the temptation to sneak onto Modjeska Canyon, enjoy the climb and quick descent of Modjeska Grade, and back on the course at Santiago Canyon, and don’t try to  “short the course” by going up Ridgeline to Saddleback and down, but you could enjoy the elevator drop of Ridgeline back to Santiago, while a “challenge route” would be to go through Live Oak and take Sta. Margarita back to Portola in the same time it would take an average rider to circle the canyon, don’t risk being “DQ’d” for going off the official course – don’t do any of that!!  Resist the temptation and save those thoughts for another day ride.

Here’s a couple of tips: Stay on course, be predictable, don’t overlap wheels, hold your line, take a pull, signal your intentions, point out any road hazards or debris, and keep your head on a swivel – always alert and aware.  There will be riders with varying degrees of  abilities, so if you can, provide a “hand-up” to help build their confidence and competence as a cyclist.  Everyone wins!

Have a safe and enjoyable ride.
If you still need more miles after enjoying the refreshments at the finish, why not head over to Dana Point for their all day Dana Point Gran Prix of Cycling?

Finish Line Festival 6:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Start Times for the runners:
7:00 – Half Marathon
7:15 –  5K Run
7:45 – 10K Run
9:30 – 5K Walk
11:00 – 1K Kids’ Run

It appears runners will be on “the regional bike trail”, San Diego Creek Trail, Jeffrey / University Trail, Yale, Barranca, and of course, Gateway; the start and finish of it all.

Everyone should be off the trails by 1pm, so please use extra caution before then, or plan your route accordingly.
Hope a great time is had by all!
